Complementary-therapy and alternative medicine listings

When a therapy is used in conjunction with conventional medical treatment, it is commonly referred to as complementary therapy. Another term use is CAM, meaning complementary and alternative medicine, and includes a diverse range of therapies such as food related therapies such as nutritional therapy and food intolerance and allergy testing as well as body therapies like reflexology and shiatsu massage. Other techniques include colonic hydrotherapy, Bio-feedback Control and Naturopathy. A key reason why many people today are drawn to CAM is the holistic approach taken to healing, rather than the more localised approach of most medicines. Holistic means that it concerns the whole body. For this reason it can be useful for treatment of conditions such as migraine, eczema, asthma, insomnia, low energy levels and stress, as well as promoting general good health and vitality. The actual therapies vary widely and many have roots in Eastern as well as western philosophy. Immigration from the Indian sub-continent in the 1850s brought practitioners of Ayurveda (‘Science of Life’), which is a medical system dating back over 2,500 years. The arrival into Britain of thousands of Chinese in the 1970s introduced Traditional Chinese Medicine, a system dating back to the Bronze Age or earlier that used acupuncture, herbs, diet and exercise.

Many therapists are specialists in one of these disciplies, but many are also multi-disciplinary, and those on this page are typically clinics offering many disciplines or therapists with a range of skills.
