Reflexology In Hopi Tribes

Reflexology, in the form of pressure point massage, is often cited as having been practiced by the Native American Hopi tribe, who have inhabited the same region for a millennium, far longer than any other people in North America. Although there is little documentation about their version of reflexology, the Hopi Tribe have a strong reputation for healing and medicine based on wisdom and instinct.

The word Hopi means peaceful people and the Hopis were indeed renowned for their healing and spiritual way of life. They are not only the oldest indiginous dwellers in this land but are considered by most other Indians to have a wisdom, a knowledge of things, beyond average comprehension and with great medicinal knowledge. Peace-loving and knit tightly together by clan relationships, they are intensely spiritual and fiercely independent. The Hopi live on top of and around three Mesas (a high plateau or tableland with steep sides) in the arid highlands of northern Arizona. The oldest continuously inhabited village in the United States is Old Oraibi, which came into being around 1050 A.D.

More commonly, the Hopi are associated with a mild and natural therapy, now known as Thermo Auricular Therapy or Hopi Ear Candles. This is often combined with reflexology and used to treat ear, nose and throat problems and in cleansing and ceremonial rituals

The Hopi candle is not a candle as such, but a hollow tube made out of cotton flax. To stiffen the flax, they are impregnated with extract of honey and herb oils, in particular chamomile, sage and St Johns wort. Once the Hopi candle has been administered to the recipient, reflexology is performed around the ear area for maximum benefit.
