Psychoanalysis

Psychoanalysis is a body of ideas and theories, the father of which is Jewish Austrian neurologist Sigmund Freud. Sigmund Freud was born on 6 May 1856 to Galician Jewish parents in the Czech Republic.. He was the first of his parents' eight children and owing to his precocious intellect, his parents favoured him over his siblings. They sacrificed everything to give him a proper education. In 1865, Sigmund attended a prominent high school where he was an outstanding pupil and graduated in 1873 with honors.

Initially planning to study law, Freud went to Paris on a travelling fellowship to study with Jean-Martin Charcot, Europe’s most renowned neurologist, who specialised in the study of hysteria and its susceptibility to hypnosis. Like Freud, Charcot had discovered that patients could exhibit symptoms with no demonstrable physical cause. Freud also became aware of an experimental treatment for hysteria utilised by his mentor and colleague, Dr Josef Breuer. This treatment was a combination of hypnotism and catharsis and which utilised abreaction (ventilation of emotion). This treatment was used to treat the hysterical symptoms of Dr. Breuer's now famous patient, Anna O. This led to his publication with Dr. Breuer in 1893 of case reports of the treatment of hysteria.

From the period of 1895 to roughly 1905, Freud's innovations led to the development of his theory, all of which were developed from his clinical work with patients. He discovered that dreams had symbolic significance, and generally were specific to the dreamer and in 1900 The Interpretation of Dreams was published. Several more publications entered circulation in the ensuing years which gained him popularity, and then in 1923, he presented his new structural theory of an id, ego, and superego in a book entitled, The Ego and the Id. Therein, he revised the whole theory of mental functioning.

The London Psychoanalytical Society was founded in 1913, and renamed the British Psychoanalytical Society in 1919. The 24-volume Standard Edition of the Complete Psychological Works of Sigmund Freud was conceived, translated, and produced under the direction of the British Psychoanalytical Society.
