Integrative Psychotherapy

Integrative psychotherapy can be used to describe any multi-modal approach which combines therapies. The word ‘integrative’ may also refer to integrating the personality and to bring about cohesion resulting in affective, cognitive, behavioural and physiological systems within a client.

Initially, Sigmund Freud developed a talking cure called psychoanalysis . After Freud had written about and popularised this therapy, many different disciplines began to appear until the modern day when we find hundreds of different theories of psychotherapy are practised.

The integrated psychotherapist is largely theoretically grounded and blends theories, concerned not only with what therapy is beneficial,but also why. The latest edition of the Handbook of Psychotherapy Integration (Norcross & Goldfried, 2005) recognises four general routes to integration. Firstly, common factors which seek to determine the core ingredients that different therapies share. Secondly, technical eclecticism which is designed to select the best treatment for the client and the problem guided by previous therapist experience. Thirdly, theoretical integration in which two or more therapies are integrated in the hope that this will produce more pleasing results than would a constituent therapy on its own. Fourthly, assimilative integration favours a firm grounding in any one system of psychotherapy but shows a willingness to assimilate in a thoughtful manner practices from other schools of psychotherapy.
