Acupuncture and traditional chinese medicine listings

Acupuncture is a method of producing analgesia or altering the function of a system of the body by inserting fine, wire-thin needles into the skin on the body along a series of lines, or channels, called meridians. The word acupuncture comes from the Latin acus, "needle", and pungere, "to prick".

According to Traditional Chinese Medical (TCM) theory, acupuncture points are situated on meridians along which qi, the vital energy, flows. Although there is no known anatomical or histological basis for the existence of these acupuncture points or meridians, the NIH consensus statement on acupuncture is that traditional Chinese medical concepts "are difficult to reconcile with contemporary biomedical information but continue to play an important role in the evaluation of patients and the formulation of treatment in acupuncture."

The earliest written record that is available about acupuncture is Huangdi Neijing. This is the legendary Yellow Emperor's Classic of Internal Medicine (History of Acupuncture), compiled around 305–204 BCE. It does not distinguish between acupuncture and moxibustion and gives the same indication for both treatments. By the 2nd century BCE, acupuncture replaced moxibustion as the primary treatment of systemic conditions. This suggests acupuncture originated in China and would explain why it is most commonly associated with traditional Chinese medicine (TCM). In Europe, however, examinations of the 5,000-year-old mummified body of Ötzi the Iceman have identified 15 groups of tattoos on his body, some of which are located on what are now seen as contemporary acupuncture points. This has been cited as evidence that practices similar to acupuncture may have been practiced elsewhere in Eurasia during the early Bronze Age.

Different types of acupuncture (Classical Chinese, Japanese, Tibetan, Vietnamese and Korean acupuncture) are practiced and taught throughout the world. In modern times, technology has been applied to traditional acupuncture principles, resulting in acupuncture related therapies such as Electroacupuncture and Sonopuncture or acutonics
